IOM Ship Registry’s online STCW endorsements hailed a success

Insight Published on 17 February 2016

Developed by PDMS, the implementation of a new system for the Isle of Man Ship Registry to process online applications for Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW) endorsements has been hailed a great success by its clients.

STCW Regulations apply to all seafarers working on Isle of Man registered commercial vessels and it is the responsibility of the ship’s operating company to ensure the requirements are being met. The Regulations require all seafarers to be assigned for service on a ship in accordance with the requirements of the STCW Convention and this includes having a valid Flag State Endorsement.

Each year the Ship Registry processes over 3,000 applications for STCW endorsements, which are issued to allow seafarers holding internationally recognised certification to sail on Isle of Man registered ships.

Dick Welsh, Director of the Isle of Man Ship Registry commented:

"The new service was developed following engagement with our clients and is an important step in providing expanded digital services for our local and international clients. The feedback we have received has been extremely positive. Much of the feedback has been around the Ship Registry’s ability to respond quickly to clients’ needs in quicker processing and turnaround time for STCW applications."

Dick continued:

"The implementation of an online service has also streamlined the processes at each end of the application, reducing processing time and paper and has thus provided improvements in line with  our commitment to energy efficiency under our ISO 14001 accreditation. I am delighted that the new process has been received so well as this reinforces both our status as one of the world’s leading flags, and our reputation for delivering high levels of service to our clients around the world."
