Welcome to the new gov.im home page – February 2003The government has launched a new home page for its website which last year had more than 1.5 million visitors. It is essential that visitors can find the information they are looking for quickly and easily. The new navigational structure together with additional features, such as quick links, will improve the user experience for anyone seeking information on the government or indeed the Isle of Man in general said the spokesman for the Treasury’s Information Systems Division. The division have worked closely with PDMS to develop the new home page which uses the latest XML technology. The government has hosted a website for the past seven years. It has grown to more than 6,000 pages, with visits from all over the world. The home page was last updated three years ago. The new home page introduces visitors to the information via three categories of user - residents, businesses and visitors (e.g. tourists). It features a What’s New headline panel and new quick links include live flight information from Ronaldsway, so that people can see the same updates at home as what’s on the screens at the airport. Government webmaster Andy Williams said: ‘We have repackaged the information so that people can find out what they want simply and quickly without having to know which department it comes under. The key is to present the information in a way that’s relevant to the public’s requirements rather than the structure of the organisation.’Meryl Batchelder of Castletown-based IT firm PDMS said: Accessibility for everyone is very important for the Isle of Man Government website, so the design is clean and simple to avoid confusing users.
