Launch of Waste Oil Website Technology developed by PDMS helps the EnvironmentThe Isle of Man's new waste oil disposal scheme was officially launched this week when the new website, developed and hosted by PDMS, went live (www.gov.im/waste). The project which is a joint initiative by the Isle of Man Government's Department of Local Government and the Environment (DLGE) and Metano Container Limited will benefit not only the environment but also local businesses and organisations that have waste oil to dispose of. Under a special dispensation to the UK Waste Management Policy Plan Policy, waste oil will be shipped in consignments of Intermediate Bulk Containers under one set of documentation. Instead of each individual waste producer bearing the costs of licensing and transportation, the new scheme spreads the cost of disposing of waste oil amongst all of the Island's waste producers, making it at an economically viable solution. The website which PDMS designed and developed using the Microsoft .NET Framework is a fully functional site that manages the complete waste disposal process, enabling all those with an involvement to access information relevant to their needs. Producers can sign up to the scheme via the website and arrange for the delivery and collection of containers. The site provides real time status reports on container movements and shipments for the scheme Operator and allows the end Disposer to generate the recovery/disposal certificates which are required by law. Bruce McGregor, Commercial Director at PDMS explained, "This is a project we are delighted to have been involved in as it is an excellent example of how Internet technology can be used effectively and efficiently to administer and manage a service such as this. In this case, it's even more satisfying as the service is also delivering real environmental benefits." The original idea for the project came from Ian Harland, Managing Director of Metano Container Limited and he added "Together with DLGE we have put in a lot of time and effort working with the UK Environment Agency to find a cost effective solution to the problem of waste oil disposal on the Island and we are really pleased that the site is now live." He continued "We have been working with PDMS for some time and have always been impressed by their technical capabilities; so for both us and Government they were the obvious company to work with on this project". The scheme has been funded by the Isle of Man Government through DLGE who hope that this initiative we lead to other similar web based schemes for other waste streams. Jeff Smith of DLGE "We have had a positive reaction from waste oil producers on the Island and we are confident that with their co-operation the scheme will be a real success". Waste oil producers who don't have access to the Internet can participate in the scheme via a telephone helpline (01207 549448) where an administrator will be on hand to enter their information into the system on their behalf. The system will initially run for a trial period of twelve months. For further information, please contact: |
