PDMS helps to keep hearts healthyThe growing problem of coronary heart disease is being tackled with the aid of technology developed by PDMS who have just completed a major project for Calm Corporation Ltd. Calm, who specialise in the production of preventive healthcare products for large multi nationals and public sector bodies such as hospitals and the police, chose PDMS as their technology partner to assist in the development of their latest product "Calm Heart", a state of the art on-line coronary assessment tool. The aim of Calm Heart is not only to monitor, review and improve the care of patients with heart disease but importantly, to reduce the risk of patients developing the disease in the first instance through assessment and education. Calm Heart has just been successfully rolled out to all of the hospitals and GP surgeries within the West Pennine area and plans are already underway for the system to be implemented by health authorities across the rest of the UK. Using an on-line questionnaire, backed by sophisticated risk calculations, the system profiles each patient's risk of heart disease and shows how, by modifying certain areas such as increasing exercise or reducing smoking etc., the risk can be reduced. Mark Allardyce, Managing Director, of Calm explained "The systems and interface for this product had to be quick and reliable so as to build the confidence of the user (practice nurses, GP's etc) whilst working in a patient driven environment. It also has to be highly secure as it contains confidential patient information. PDMS have delivered a solution which meets all of our requirements, it is easy to use allowing simple but comprehensive input of risk factor data". He went on to add, " We firmly believe that Calm Heart will rapidly become the backbone of coronary prevention and rehabilitation clinics in the UK and further afield". Complex risk analysis and interactive target setting together with features such as an instant audit facility have meant that on a technical level, the project has been a real challenge. The team at PDMS have collaborated closely with Calm to deliver a system that will be used to screen thousands of patients and ultimately help in the fight against coronary heart disease". On the back of this successful project, PDMS' venture into the healthcare software sector is set to continue and they are currently collaborating with Calm on projects to develop new diagnostic software systems.
