December 2006 - New beginnings or business as usual?
As a confirmed scrooge – bah humbug- there is a certain satisfaction in writing an article for publication in January in the run up to Christmas. No need to be too jolly or festive – so just pass me a glass of mulled wine then let’s think about the harsh realities of life after the turkey sandwiches have curled at the edges and the last few mince pies have settled on the waistline.
November 2006 - Onshore, Offshore – are you sure?
With the ever-changing dynamics of the IT industry, there are not many organizations involved in the delivery of systems who have not considered alternative models for development. Onshore, offshore, near-shore, subcontract, outsource – the options have become as baffling as buying coffee.
October 2006 - Banking on IT
Know Your Customer (KYC) is one of the fundamental principles underlying most well regulated financial systems. The idea is that provided banks and other financial service providers know who they are dealing with, terrorists, gangsters and the like won’t be able to hide their ill-gotten gains and we will all sleep more safely; a laudable aim and one which I wholeheartedly support.
September 2006 - Welcome to the world of the blog
We all recognise the impact that the Internet and its associated technologies have had on communication, but in the last few years a phenomenon known as the “blog” has revolutionised communication in both the online and offline world.
August 2006 - Mobiles Devices and their use with business applications, they do exactly what is says on the tin…. or do they?
We are bombarded every day via the many channels of advertising and media about the power and effectiveness of using mobile devices in our everyday lives.
July 2006 - A foreigner in my own land
In a recent speech at the advertising film awards in Cannes, Maurice Saatchi announced the imminent demise of ‘traditional advertising’ at the hands of the ‘digital native’.
June 2006 - State of the art
I am writing this article from WWW2006 – the 15th International World Wide Web Conference, being held this year in Edinburgh.
May 2006 - Turning over a new leaf
Curling up on the sofa or lounging on a sun bed with a dog eared paperback copy of your favourite novel could soon be a thing of the past; well that’s what the analysts are predicting.
April 2006 - WWW the sequel
I was slightly peeved the other day to get a spam email advertising a new and innovative low cost telecommunications service. The service promised much including the ability to virtually eliminate roaming charges on mobile phones. So why the irritation you may ask, surely this is the sort of thing I would be interested in?
March 2006 - Of Magpie’s and Origami…
There’s a new buzz in some circles caused by, well you might have guessed it, “Microsoft!” You might expect that any buzz around Microsoft would be about some latest software or latest operating system codenamed “short-tuba” or the like but no it’s actually about the latest must have hardware gizmo, or “Ultra-Mobile PC”.
February 2006 - What’s in a name?
The domain name has become a part of life. Appearing everywhere from advertisements to business cards, strings of words and dots have become ubiquitous. ‘dot com’ is now part of everyday vocabulary – the explosive growth of ‘dot com’ businesses resulted in the ‘dot com’ boom and so on. The relatively painless growth the domain name system (DNS) has experienced over the last twenty years is testament to the foresight of those who put the structure in place originally.
January 2006 - You can’t stop Rock and Roll…
As I write in the aftermath of the consumer electronics bonanza, more commonly known as Christmas, listening (slightly furtively) to my daughter’s new iPod, I am struck once again by the fascinating interaction of technical, commercial, legal and marketing forces competing to shape the future of the entertainment industry.
