Formed in 1998 betinternet.com plc is an offshore gaming operation offering tax free sports and tote betting services on the Internet. Based in the Isle of Man, the company operates under a licence issued by the Isle of Man Government and adheres to stringent regulatory controls. betinternet.com offers betting opportunities on a wide range of major international sporting events such as Soccer including the Premiership Football The company has invested significantly in new technology and the on-line operation is the focal point of betinternet's operations, available to its international client base on a 365 24/7 basis.

betinternet's business continues to grow through organic growth and acquisition and in 2003 the company saw a 140% increase in the number of customer accounts. betintnernet recently set up Euro Off-Track Limited, a 50-50 partnership with the Greyhound Channel Inc of America to enable, for the first time, non US customers to bet directly into US Totes.

As a rapidly growing company operating in a very dynamic market, betinternet required a technology partner who would be able respond quickly to the inevitable changes in both technology and the betting industry. After evaluating off the shelf software packages available at that time, betinternet.com found that the solutions on offer did not meet their current requirements and were not flexible enough to accommodate future changes quickly and cost effectively. They also decided that a one stop solution with a supplier who could provide business software, web graphic design and programming together with hosting solutions would be the best option for their business. By dealing with a single supplier as opposed to several, the company would be able to devote more management time to developing the business as opposed to managing an array of IT suppliers.

betinternet selected PDMS as their technology partner as they were able to demonstrate a clear understanding of betinternet's business requirements and moreover, could provide betinternet.com with a bespoke solution with the flexibility and scalability to accommodate future changes. In addition, PDMS' skills set was broad enough to cover all of betinternet.com's design and programming requirements and PDMS' business partnership with Domicilium gave them access to state of the art hosting facilities.

The rapidly changing nature of the betting industry is one of the key ongoing challenges of the project, with continuous major updates required to the systems that run the betting operation to meet changing business requirements.

betinternet.com required their online operation to be up and running in a relatively short time frame and PDMS' first task was to work with betinternet.com to define the functionality of the betting system, back office administration systems and the front end website.

Betinternet Web Site in Thai

The web site which is the customer facing element of betinternet.com's Internet operation forms only a small part of a complex and sophisticated system. The web site is multi lingual currently supporting 5 languages ranging from English, German, Italian to Thai and Cantonese. Customers can browse easily through the events with different presentation styles dependant on the sport they choose. The placing of bets is made as quick and simple as possible with a user friendly online betting slip and each bet placed is subject to real-time liability risk assessment to manage financial exposure. Customers can open a client account online with the facility to review their account history, review bets placed, make credit card deposits to their accounts in numerous currencies or request withdrawals.

Back Office Event Maintenance

The back office systems behind the website consists of a number of core applications which manage the betting system. These include:

  • An event creation and update facility to manage events, the possible outcomes and the associated betting odds available on the website.
  • Client account management tools.
  • A betting activity monitor to provide betinternet.com's administrators with a real-time view of all bets being placed.
  • A liability risk management system to provide the betinternet.com management team with an analysis of their current position.
  • A result entry and winning calculation systems to pay out winnings to customers.
  • A credit card deposit system to manage credit card referrals from the bank and credit rating system.
  • A withdrawal request system to manage the return of money by various methods.

PDMS' project team worked closely with betinternet to ensure that the deadlines for the systems implementation were met and the betinternet.com website successfully went live in March of 2000. .

In order to respond to the changing business requirements of the company and to maximise the business opportunities provided by technology, betinternet.com's systems require ongoing development. All software enhancements to the systems are managed by PDMS on a project basis and the experienced team ensure that individual or parallel projects are delivered to meet tight deadlines. In order to minimise disruption to services, PDMS install software upgrades and enhancements seamlessly over the live betting system; in some instances this requires significant database restructuring.

Recent significant developments include the integration of newly acquired business into the betinternet platform and the development of the gateway platform to enable betinternet.com to offer co-mingled tote wagering.

The betinternet.com system makes use of the latest Microsoft .NET framework It employs a standard logical 3-tier software architecture designed for maximum flexibility:

  • The web presentation layer is implemented using the latest PDMS Foundations TM framework. The content is delivered using XML merged with XSL to dynamically generate the cached multi-lingual HTML web pages. This technology has allowed PDMS' experienced web design team to create an innovative design that meets the human factors requirement of placing a bet whilst delivering the highest levels of performance that end users expect from a leading online gambling web site.
  • The application layer is based on Microsoft Windows 2000 COM+ architecture to provide the necessary business logic for the web site and back office functionality. The application layer is split into multiple tiers to allow complex functionality to be broken up into discrete and manageable components. This facilitates rapid development of functional changes to meet betinternet's ever-changing business requirements.
  • The data layer is based on Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Enterprise edition to hold all event, client and bet information. This platform was chosen on a cost and performances basis.

The platform provides a number of XML web services to provide B2B customers with update sports odds' information and the ability to place tote wagers directly into the USA. This feature makes use of the latest PDMS FoundationsTM for Web Services technology.

The systems developed by PDMS receive over a million hits a day, handle hundreds of concurrent users and can calculate and settle a hundred bets per second. The daily peak has exceeded 17,000 bets and 2.3 million hits without any strain on the systems.

One of the major strengths of the systems designed by PDMS for betinternet is their flexibility, major changes and updgrades are rolled out on a regular basis with minimum disruption to betinternet's business. Support of a such a business critical and complex system is also crucial and PDMS provide a high level of service to betinternet in this area. The uptime figures for the systems are impressive, currently standing at 99.99% availability to clients since the launch in March 2000.
